Ask the Expert – Sean McGunnigle

Sean McGunnigle is a principal environmental scientist at EHS Support with over 25 years’ experience in environmental approvals and management covering a wide range of mining and oil and gas projects in both the private and public sectors.

Over his career, Sean has managed a large team of technical staff to deliver all environmental approvals for three mining hubs, a major iron ore export port facility, and a 300+km railway system for a major iron ore producer in Australia’s Pilbara region.

Sean’s experience also extends to the oil and gas sector. He delivers advice and approvals on a wide range of oil and gas projects for clients, including Woodside’s Browse and North-West Shelf Joint Venture projects.

What do you find most rewarding about the work that you do?

Helping clients understand the value to their business that protecting key environmental assets offers and how that leads to gaining support from stakeholders and approvals from government regulators.

What are you currently working on?

EHS Support is building an environmental approvals and compliance service in Western Australia for clients in the mining, oil and gas, and renewables industries. We have recently acquired Australasian Environmental Solutions, a local consultancy servicing oil and gas clients, and we are continuing to build on existing mining clients in bauxite, iron ore, and gold.

How can our clients benefit from this service/particular innovation?

By gaining environmental approval, our clients can realise the value of the resource within their tenement or land holding.  Our ongoing environmental management and compliance services allow for predictable, sustained operations.

What is a little-known fact about you?

I was named captain of the South Fremantle Australian Rules football under 19s Team in 1992.
