Exploring Risk, Innovation, and Sustainability at ALGA 2024 Auckland Conference

The Australasian Land & Groundwater Association (ALGA) 2024 Auckland Conference held 22-24 October, 2024 was truly a showcase of the range and quality of contaminated land work being performed across New Zealand. With a theme centred on Risk, Innovation, and Sustainability, this year’s conference took things to a whole new level, thanks in part to the collaboration with the Interstate Technology & Regulatory Council (ITRC) and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. A massive shoutout to ALGA for pulling together such a technically robust and inspiring event!

EHS Support is proud to have played a vital role in the event, serving on the conference organising committee and presenting our technical work completed across New Zealand. We extend our gratitude to our clients for their support and to our colleagues, including Chrissy Peterson from EHS Support in the United States, who presented alongside ITRC-associated colleagues on the Assessment of Background Conditions and Relevance to Environmental Risk and Management.

Missed Our Presentations? No Worries!

For those who didn’t attend the conference or if you were a delegate and want quick access to the EHS Support presentations, we’ve provided links below along with summaries of the key topics covered.

Puhipuhi Mercury Mine, Andrew Rumsby

Andrew described the investigation and risk assessment of the legacy mercury mine, with a focus on the use of mass balance techniques to gauge the level of environmental effects from the mine relative to contributions from background geothermal mercury deposits.

Risk Assessment – Asbestos in Air vs Soil Moisture in New Zealand, David Dangerfield

David described the role soil moisture plays in the potential release of asbestos fibres from asbestos-contaminated soil and presented a case to change the New Zealand Tier 1 asbestos in soil human health risk criteria, based on soil climate data.

Community Lane Re-development, Simon Hunt

Simon provided an overview of the life cycle of a large-scale residential re-development constructed over a petroleum hydrocarbon contamination plume and explored “what worked and what didn’t work” from a contaminated land management perspective.

Continuous Landfill Gas Monitoring, Simon Hunt, co-authored by landfill gas specialists in the UK and Australia

Simon presented an overview of current landfill gas migration mechanisms and explored current best practices when defining worst-case conditions for gas monitoring. The paper explores and presents the benefits of continuous landfill gas monitoring.

Groundwater Surface Water Interactions – Sampling Pore Water to Establish Exposure Point Contaminant Concentrations, Simon Hunt and EHS Support US staff

Simon and the EHS Support US staff discussed the background and complexities of contaminated groundwater discharges to surface water bodies and presented a practical option to collect pore water samples at the interface of this discharge.

The work shared by EHS Support at the ALGA 2024 Auckland Conference exemplifies our commitment to innovative thinking and delivering technically robust, commercially sound solutions to complex environmental challenges. Should you have any further questions or require more details, please feel free to contact Simon Hunt, Andrew Rumsby, or David Dangerfield.
