As a part of the 2016 Hazardous Waste Generator Improvements Rule, Small Quantity Generators (SQGs) in states that have adopted the rule are required to re-notify United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) or their state environmental agency of their generator status every four years. The next re-notification is due by September 1, 2025.
A map of the states where the Generator Improvements Rule is in effect is available here.
What is a Small Quantity Generator?
A SQG is a facility that generates one or more of the following quantities in a calendar month:
- Greater than 220 pounds but less than 2,200 pounds of non-acute hazardous waste
- Less than or equal to 2.2 pounds of acute hazardous waste
- Less than or equal to 220 pounds of acute hazardous waste spill cleanup material
How to Complete Re-Notification
SQGs should update and submit either the USEPA Notification of RCRA Subtitle C Activities Site Identification (EPA Form 8700-12) or the state equivalent notification form. In some states, this form can be completed and submitted electronically through MyRCRAID. SQGs should ensure that the submission is completed by September 1, 2025.
